“Humor”是常見(jiàn)的英文單詞，畢竟每個(gè)人的生活中都少不了幽默。在西方，無(wú)論男女，十有八九的擇偶條件是“He/She must has a sense of humor”。或許大家對(duì)“humor”的這種意思太熟悉了，很多人想當(dāng)然地把它與“幽默”劃上等號(hào)，這集中體現(xiàn)在英語(yǔ)非母語(yǔ)者對(duì)“humor someone”的錯(cuò)誤理解上。
在不借助字典的情況下，你如何翻譯“humor someone”呢？如果你的答案是“逗樂(lè)某人，幽某人一默”，那你就犯了想當(dāng)然的錯(cuò)誤。的確，英語(yǔ)中有許多名詞和動(dòng)詞同形的例子，例如“model”作名詞是模特，作動(dòng)詞是當(dāng)模特；“eye”作名詞是眼睛，作動(dòng)詞則是“注視、看”。
按此邏輯，“humor”作名詞是幽默，那么作動(dòng)詞自然應(yīng)該表示“逗樂(lè)”，但恰恰“humor”不是這種類(lèi)型的單詞，它的動(dòng)詞定義是“to agree with somebody’s wishes, even if they seem unreasonable, in order to keep the person happy”（遷就，順從）。從定義看，“humor someone”與“indulge someone”意思差不多，都表示“即使某人提出無(wú)理的意愿也要盡力滿足�！�
《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》給出的例句是“She thought it best to humor him rather than get into an argument.”（她想最好是順?biāo)囊猓缓退麪?zhēng)吵。）在實(shí)際運(yùn)用中，“humor someone”常以“humor me”的形式出現(xiàn)。每當(dāng)要表達(dá)“你就順了我的意吧”或“你就滿足我吧”的時(shí)候，我們就可以說(shuō)“humor me”，有時(shí)為加強(qiáng)語(yǔ)氣，還可以在前面加上“just”。
例如： Earl: I’ve written a new song. It’s my best work yet. You must hear it now! （嘿，我剛寫(xiě)了首新歌。這是我最得意的作品，你得馬上聽(tīng)聽(tīng)。）
Lisa: I’m very busy at the moment. Not really in the mood for this. Some other time, maybe? （我現(xiàn)在很忙，沒(méi)心情聽(tīng)歌，要不以后再說(shuō)吧？）
Earl: Oh, come on, humor me, OK? （拜托，你就順我的意嘛，好不好？）
“Humor me”這種用法也常出現(xiàn)在影視作品里。2007年4 月在國(guó)內(nèi)公映的電影《龍騎士》（Eragon）里就有一例。片中人物Eragon迫不及待地要顯示自己的劍術(shù)，但又覺(jué)得Brom是“老人”，跟他比試不太公平。Brom說(shuō)沒(méi)問(wèn)題，盡管放馬過(guò)來(lái)。
兩人對(duì)話如下：
Eragon: I have skills! I can fight. My cousin Roran and I, we’ve trained, with swords!（我有技術(shù)！我能打斗。我表哥羅倫和我都練過(guò)劍。）
Brom: Well then, perhaps I’ve underestimated you. Right then, let’s see these skills of yours. （好吧，可能我低估你了。那我們切磋一下吧。）
Eragon: This won’t be fair to you, old man.（這對(duì)您可能不太公平，老人家。）
Brom: Humor me.（就照我說(shuō)的來(lái)吧。）
Brom: [Brom hits Eragon down immediately] Oh, dear, I see the effect of your training. [布羅姆一下子就把埃拉貢打倒在地]（噢，親愛(ài)的，原來(lái)你的訓(xùn)練就這點(diǎn)效果。） |
